SOUTH AFRICA MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

South Africa has joined the rest of the world in observing World Environment Day Sunday to address ecological problems.

The 2016 theme for World Environment Day was “Go Wild for Life” and focused on the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.

South Africa has also been marred by the illegal trade of rhino horn.

According to statis from the Stop Rhino Poaching environment groups, more than 300 rhino have been killed by poachers in South Africa so far this year.

The City of Cape Town’s Johan van der Merwe says citizens should also protect endangered plant species.

“In recognition of World Environment Day, let us make a concerted effort to conserve our most endangered plant species which are nearing extinction. This includes the world’s smallest protea of which only eight remains.
