South Africa: Tip-Off Leads to Arrest of Wanted Man in Limpopo

A man connected to at least 16 serious crimes, including rape and house robberies, is finally behind bars after a tip-off led to his arrest in Limpopo, police said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said police had been trying to find the 26-year-old man from Thohoyandou since 2015 when he was ‘”terrorising” people in the area.

After a breakthrough tip-off from the community, a joint operation between provincial detectives and a task team pinned him down in Saselamani near Malamulele, said Ngoepe.

In the course of the arrest, police found an unlicensed firearm stolen from a house in Acornhoek in May 2016.

The suspect is wanted in connection with at least 16 house robberies, housebreaking, rape, theft out of a motor vehicle, rape, attempted rape and for being in possession of a firearm without a licence.

He is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The same operation also led to the arrest of five people in Modimolle and Burgersfort, and the recovery of three unlicensed firearms and two stolen vehicles.

One of the cars, a BMW, had been stolen in Pretoria West.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Nneke Jimmy Ledwaba commended the police for the operation.
