South Africa to Join Global Development Finance Summit in Spain

Seville: South Africa's International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, will lead the country's delegation to the 4th International Conference on the Financing for Development Summit, taking place in Seville, Spain, from June 30 to July 3, 2025. The event is organized at the behest of President Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón of Spain and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. According to South African Government News Agency, the conference aims to address contemporary and evolving challenges in financing for development, emphasizing the need to fully realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and transform the global financial framework. The Presidency announced that President Ramaphosa has appointed Minister Lamola as the Head of Delegation due to recent domestic political dynamics necessitating diligent oversight. The Presidency also stated that South Africa's involvement in the summit aligns with its G20 Presidency objectives, focusing on solidarity, equality, and sustai nability to support the summit's mission of reshaping the global financial system in favor of the Sustainable Development Goals. During the summit, South Africa will host a side event themed 'Forging a Common Agenda to Achieve Debt Sustainability in Developing Economies.' This initiative seeks cooperation to devise sustainable strategies for managing high structural deficits and liquidity challenges, with an emphasis on extending debt relief to developing nations, particularly those in Africa. The side event aims to gather influential figures from various debt-related initiatives to identify common ground and propose widely supported solutions. South Africa's delegation includes Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Maropene Ramokgopa, Deputy Minister of Finance David Masondo, and senior government officials.
