Pretoria, South Africa will promote debates on womens role in peace and security at the United Nations, taking advantage of its position as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Foreign Minister Nadeli Pandor announced.
The minister for International Relations and Cooperation said at a meeting on South Africa’s stance on women that the debate will take place in October, when the country will hold the presidency of the Security Council.
She explained that South Africa is working on a draft resolution, along with other UN member States and its specialized agency (UN Women), to discuss the role women should play in peace and security.
The minister underlined that no woman has started a war, but millions of them are victims of armed conflicts.
They must participate in achieving peace and should not be excluded, Pandor noted.
The diplomat charged that countries outside Africa use the continent as a base of conflicts, and called on non-governmental organizations to oversee the role of the peace forces of the United Nations and the African Union.
