South Africa Urges Global Support to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals

Johannesburg: Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Seiso Mohai, emphasized the necessity of international collaboration for developing nations to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Speaking at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Mohai highlighted South Africa's ongoing initiatives to eradicate poverty, combat inequality, and safeguard the environment.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mohai outlined South Africa's sustained efforts in poverty reduction, inequality alleviation, unemployment mitigation, and the promotion of sustainable industrialisation, climate resilience, food security, energy transition, and social protection. He emphasized South Africa's commitment to ensuring inclusivity, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, youth, persons with disabilities, and rural communities.

Despite facing global and domestic challenges, Mohai reported progress in areas like access to electricity, safe water, sanitation, digital connectivity, and social protection services. He noted that investments in renewable energy and sustainable industrialisation are fostering a more resilient and inclusive economy. The expansion of broadband infrastructure and digital access is also opening up avenues for innovation, education, and economic engagement, although challenges persist.

Mohai reiterated the need for stronger implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through enhanced partnerships and financing. South Africa prioritizes infrastructure investment, energy transition, industrial development, youth employment, skills development, and climate resilience. He called on the international community to fulfill commitments regarding development financing, technology transfer, capacity building, debt sustainability, and reforming the global financial structure.

As the 2030 deadline approaches, Mohai urged for accelerated implementation through leadership, policy coherence, innovation, and strengthened partnerships, reaffirming South Africa's dedication to solidarity, inclusive growth, and sustainable development.
