SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNIST PARTY WARNS IT MAY CONTEST POLLS INDEPENDENTLY

The South African Communist Party (SACP), a partner of the Tripartite Alliance with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), has warned that it might contest the 2019 general election as a separate entity.

Currently holding its central committee meeting in Johannesburg, the SACP has admitted that the ANC finds itself in a very unstable position, which is harming the SACP.

The SACP meeting aims to unpack problems it has within the Tripartite Alliance.

SACP Deputy General Secretary Jeremy Cronin, who is also a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC and Deputy Minister of Public Works, says the SACP refuses to make calls for President Jacob Zuma to step down or be recalled. SACP members now contest elections on the ANC ticket.

“Decisions around recalls of individuals leaders are ANC decisions, but we are saying the ANC does need to .. whether it’s the ANC NEC or the broader ANC conferences, the ANC has got to take full responsibility for these matters,” he said here Wednesday.

“We’re not specifically calling for this or that individual to be recalled or resign or so on. But we have made it very clear that there’s been a serious leadership lack.”
