SOUTH AFRICAN OPPOSITION PARTIES MEETING ON MONDAY ON NO CONFIDENCE MOTION AGAINST ZUMA

JOHANNESBURG, A meeting o leaders of South Africa’s opposition parties is being convened in Johannesburg Monday to reach agreement on the way forward in their attempts to remove President Jacob Zuma from office, says Mmusi Maimane, leader of the biggest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA).

This follows the Cabinet reshuffle announced by the president in the early hours of Friday morning which saw five ministers, including Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, being dismissed.

Maimane said here Sunday that President Jacob Zuma’s decision to fire Gordhan is “devastating” for the future of the country. “We are fast running out of time to save our country from the clutches of the Zuma Administration,” he stressed.

He added that that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) of former national leaders such as Nelson Mandela was now an organization run by Zuma and the Gupta business family. “It’s now, more than ever, that our commitment to remove Zuma from power is more resolute.”

The DA says it will hold a march to the ANC’s headquarters to call on the governing party to support its Motion of No Confidence in President Zuma. Maimane said he would lead the march to ANC head office at Luthuli House on Friday.

Meanwhile, Parliament has confirmed that the DA has submitted a request for a motion of no confidence debate in President Zuma. It will be the first motion of no confidence brought by Maimane in 2017.

Maimane also tabled a motion of no confidence in Zuma in March last year, following the sacking of former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene in December 2015. Another motion was also brought in November last year by Maimane. All the motions have failed so far.

Such a motion requires 201 of the 400 National Assembly members to vote in favor of a Vote of NO confidence motion in order for it to be successful. If such a motion is successful, then the President, his Deputy, Cabinet Ministers and all their deputies must resign as provided for under section 102 of the Constitution.
