Police in South Africa’s Limpopo Province say theyhave arrested 2,306 people during the festive season for a range of offences which include assault and murder.

They also recovered stolen goods during some of the arrests, Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said Monday, adding that the police deemed their festive season police visibility campaigns a success.

He said police were able to apprehend hundreds of criminals and recover stolen property. Ngoepe added that the police also seized drugs worth thousands of Rands.

Ngoepe said: Up to this (Monday) morning we managed to arrest 2,306 suspects for various offences ranging from assault, murder and house breaking to kidnapping and liquor related-traffic offences. We recovered almost 26 pistols and 24 stolen motor vehicles and 52 stolen cell phones.

We also managed to recover drugs with the estimated value of 192,000 Rand (about 14,000 US dollars).

He said that unlike previous years, police were able to claim back areas which had been declared crime hotspots, leaving criminals with no room to conduct their business across the province.
