SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM IN BULAWYO FOR COSAFA CUP

BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE– The South African women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, has arrived here for the 2017 Cosafa Cup Women’s Championship, with their opening match coming on Thursday against Lesotho.

The three-time Cosafa Cup champions flew out this city, located some 440 kilometres south west of the capital, Harare, on Monday for the 12-day event which will see 11 other countries compete for the title. The tournament is organized by the Council of Southern Africa Football (Cosafa).

Although Banyana Banyana have dominated the Cosafa Women’s Championship by winning three of the four finals since its inception in 2002, they are heading for uncharted waters on this occasion.

Since the Rio Olympics last year, the team has undergone a number of changes. There will be a number of new faces when Banyana Banyana play Lesotho in their opening match at the Luveve Stadium here Thursday afternoon.

In addition, it will be Banyana Banyana’s first competitive outing since their 2-0 loss to France in Reunion in January. However, interim coach Desiree Ellis is confident ahead of the tournament.

”We’ve got a new group of players with 10 new players coming in since the French game which was held in January. We had a selection camp at the end of July; some of the players had been to the World Student Games. So far the preparations have gone really well.”
