Pretoria:As the country observes World Rabies Day, Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp has called on South Africans to help prevent and eliminate rabies by ensuring their pets are vaccinated against the disease.
According to South African Government News Agency, World Rabies Day, observed annually on 28 September, aims to promote rabies prevention and highlight progress towards eradicating the disease. This year marks the 20th observance under the theme 'Stronger Together,' emphasizing collaboration among communities, pet owners, veterinary professionals, and other stakeholders.
Minister Aucamp stressed the importance of vaccination during Rabies Month, urging pet owners to ensure their animals are immunized. The Department of Agriculture highlighted that vaccinating pets is crucial not only for pet care but also for protecting families and communities.
The campaign underscores the One Health approach, recognizing the interconnection of human, animal, and environmental health in disease prevention. Rabies, a viral disease affecting the central nervous system, is nearly always fatal once symptoms manifest but is preventable through timely vaccination.
The department advised that anyone exposed to a potentially rabid animal should clean the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. Post-exposure prophylaxis can prevent the disease if administered promptly.
The public is encouraged to seek information on rabies vaccination and prevention from local veterinarians or animal welfare organizations.
