South Africa’s Department of Basic Education Celebrates Educators on World Teachers’ Day

Pretoria:The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has honored approximately 485,000 educators across South Africa, acknowledging their vital role in shaping the nation's future and contributing to the development of its children.

According to South African Government News Agency, the annual commemoration of World Teachers' Day on October 5th provided an opportunity to appreciate the teaching profession and the impact educators have in transforming educational ambitions into learning opportunities throughout the country.

The celebration follows the 2026 National Teacher Awards, where the department recognized educators for their professionalism, innovation, leadership, and commitment to excellence in teaching. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube emphasized the importance of teachers in shaping South Africa's future, noting their role in unlocking potential and expanding opportunities for students across townships, rural communities, and farms.

The DBE's strategic priorities underline the need for sustained investment in teacher development, particularly in the formative years of education. These priorities focus on strengthening Early Childhood Development, Foundation Phase literacy and numeracy, inclusion, and school safety. This year, 10,000 foundation phase teachers are receiving targeted literacy and numeracy training, with continued efforts to support the National Reading Literacy Strategy and Mother Tongue-based Bilingual Education.

Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr. Reginah Mhaule, highlighted the importance of ongoing professional development for improving learning outcomes. She stated that enhancing teachers' knowledge, skills, and confidence strengthens classrooms and improves prospects for every child.

World Teachers' Day also underscores the significance of sharing excellence and effective practices within the education system. The DBE encourages outstanding educators to become sources of professional knowledge for their peers, allowing successful teaching approaches to benefit more learners. Minister Gwarube remarked on the importance of knowledge and excellence traveling throughout the system to strengthen it.

The department acknowledged the contributions of many educators whose efforts may not be publicly recognized, emphasizing the everyday moments that create lasting impacts on learners. These moments include when a child grasps a difficult concept or a teacher inspires a struggling student to persevere.

The DBE called on learners, parents, and communities to appreciate and support teachers who serve school communities daily. It expressed gratitude to South African teachers for their professionalism, resilience, and commitment to the country's children, reinforcing that strong educators build strong foundations for the future.
