#SpringcleanCT campaign sees nearly 75000 bags of litter removed to date

The City of Cape Town is excited to report that the #SpringcleanCT campaign is maintaining its momentum. The programme is also being boosted by the delivery of three new front-end loaders with a combined value of R7,5 million, two of which are meant for the removal of illegal dumping.

Efforts linked to the #springcleanCT campaign have resulted in 74 540 bags of general litter and 858 bags of recycling being removed to date.
Furthermore, the City has recently taken delivery of three new front-end loaders, two of which will assist in the battle against illegal dumping.
As part of the campaign, the City has launched a 24-hour toll-free number to report tip-offs about illegal dumping activity. Those convicted of illegal dumping could be fined up to R5 000, have their vehicle impounded, or face a two-year prison sentence. In addition, for every report that leads to a fine and conviction, the City is offering a reward from R1000 up to R5000, depending on the offence.
If residents would like to get involved they are encouraged to arrange a clean-up or sponsor a community clean-up. Be sure to share your efforts on social media with the hashtag #SpringCleanCT so more people are hopefully inspired to take action.
‘A big part of successfully reducing littering and dumping is communities taking ownership of their space. Those communities that help look after streets and public places by reporting dumping and littering, organising clean-ups, and in some cases confronting those responsible for pollution, generally live in much cleaner areas. People who dump will look for soft targets, so let us as the people of Cape Town create a less welcoming space for dumping by mobilising our communities against this issue,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.
