Statement by Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase

The City of Cape Town and the Vehicle Operating Company, HG Travelling Services CC, wish to inform all Dial-a-Ride users that the service has resumed, as of Saturday 5 January 2019.

The service suffered a temporary setback due to unexpected delays in the procurement of a long-term, six-year contract. To ensure continuity of the service, the City Manager approved the extension of the current contract on a month-to-month basis (for a 12-month period) as the appeals process of the six-year contract is resolved.

Late afternoon on Friday, 4 January the City received confirmation that the applications for operating licenses, and the roadworthy tests for the vehicles, had been finalised. I want to thank our partners for going the extra mile that ensured the service could resume in time for the start of the school year and the return to work for many users. The Provincial Regulatory Entity allocated additional staff to ensure the operating licences could be processed timeously, and vehicle inspections were prioritised. Now that HG Travelling CC – the Dial-a-Ride operator – has started taking bookings, the services are running without further complications.

Dial-a-Ride users are advised to call the Transport Information Centre (TIC) on 0800 656 463 for regular updates – the TIC is available 24/7.
