Sterling investigation by young detective secures a sentence of 15 years imprisonment for accused found guilty on tampering with essential infrastructure

On Friday, 28 January 2022 Vosloorus Magistrates’ Court sentenced Mahlomola Johannes Mashego to 15 years of imprisonment. Mashego was found guilty on charges of tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of stolen property.

SAPS Dawn Park Detective Tracing Unit were at Villa Liza on Thursday, 28 May 2019 when they noticed an African male digging a hole in the ground. Further investigation revealed that the accused was busy digging out copper cables. The accused was swiftly arrested for possession of stolen property. A docket was subsequently opened and allocated to Constable Mdunyelwa for further investigation.

Constable Mdunyelwa’s alertness led to an additional charge being added – tampering of essential infrastructure.

Mashego was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
