Suspect arrested and two firearms recovered

Port Elizabeth: A 25-year-old gang affiliate was arrested and two firearms recovered on Friday, 8 February 2019 by patrolling Public Order Policing members in Gelvandale.

It is alleged that at about 15:20, Public Order Policing members (POP) were in Goliath Street when they noticed two suspicious males in the street. As the police vehicle stopped, one of the males started running and the two police Constables were on his heels in pursuit. Just before jumping over a wall of a back yard, the suspect disposed of a firearm (revolver) on the ground and continued running. The suspect was apprehended in a yard in Van Duuren Street.

While police were still processing the crime scene, another firearm (9mm Norinco pistol) was found a few metres away.

The suspect was detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition while an inquiry docket was opened for the second recovery.

The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit (Gang Investigations) is investigating the cases. The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 February 2019.
