Suspect arrested for attacking a police officer

POTCHEFSTROOM – The police in Ikageng near Potchefstroom have on Saturday, 28 March 2020 at about 02:45 arrested a 29-year-old suspect for attacking a police officer.

It is alleged that two members of Ikageng SAPS were busy with crime prevention patrols in Sarafina when they came across the suspect. The pair then stopped the suspect and upon searching him, a laptop was found in his possession. Upon questioning, the suspect told members that the laptop belongs to his friend. A further search was conducted on the suspect and he was found to be in possession of a knife. It was at that point that the suspect tried to flee, but he was apprehended swiftly. During the scuffle with police members, one member was bitten on the right hand and stabbed on the left hand by the suspect. The members eventually overpowered the suspect and arrested him. He is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 March 2020 for possession of suspected stolen property and assault.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the efforts of the two members and commended them for their vigilance and bravery. He also warned that police will be relentless when conducting their duties and that no amount of threats from criminals will discourage them from their mandate of curbing crime
