Suspect arrested for murder of 6-year-old child: Port Elizabeth

PORT ELIZABETH – On Thursday, 3 October 2019, SAPS Gelvandale Tracing Team arrested a 20-year-old suspect in Chamois Street for the alleged shooting of Jay-Linn Jantjies (6) on 23 September 2019.

It is alleged that on Monday, 23 September 2019 at about 17:00, the 6-year-old child was on the pavement in front of her house in Kobus Road when shots were fired, hitting her in her head.

Intensive investigation was conducted in the area and the suspect was sought but was evading arrest. On 3 October 2019, SAPS Gelvandale Tracing Team and detective members spotted him in Deverill Road and a chase ensued, resulting in his apprehension in Chamois Street. He was detained on a charge of attempted murder as well as an unrelated case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and pointing of a firearm.

On Friday evening, 04 October 2019, little Miss Jay-Linn Jantjies passed away in hospital.

The suspect will now appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court for murder.

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Andre Swart sends his condolences to the family of the child and has re-iterated that ‘callous criminals such as this must be removed from society. We will be working closely with the prosecuting authority to ensure a successful prosecution,’ added Maj Gen Swart.
