Suspect due to appear before court after allegedly torched his girlfriend to death

NELSPRUIT – A 35-year-old suspect is due to appear in absentia before the Standerton Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 26 May 2021, on allegations of torching his 23-year-old girlfriend to death. This unpalatable incident occurred yesterday, 24 May 2021, in Sakhile Township near Standerton.

According to information, the suspect was last seen in a shack with his girlfriend, however his family members were shocked to realise that the very same shack the two were in, was burning. While they were still pondering about what happened, news broke that the suspect escaped the fire with some burnt wounds, surprisingly leaving behind his girlfriend. Emergency Services and police were summoned to the scene where his girlfriend was unfortunately certified dead. Police suspected a foul play about the incident as the man is believed to have started the fire, hence he was arrested and currently under police guard at the hospital.

The incident has been strongly condemned and viewed as despicable by the management of police in Mpumalanga led by the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga. “We urge the community to seek professional help whenever facing challenges rather than turning against each other. Gender-Based-Violence in our society can be overcomed if all opinion leaders and community formations can work together, “said Major General Thulani Phahla.
