Suspected ATM scammers come up short

The four suspects were among 234 arrests made by the City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments in the past week. Staff also issued 89 426 fines.

City CCTV operators spotted a group of males loitering near an ATM in Woodstock on Saturday, 23 April 2022.

They were interacting with customers using the ATM, which raised a flag, and operators dispatched Woodstock SAPS to investigate.

By the time officers arrived on scene, the suspects had got into a silver Golf and driven off, but the CCTV operator was keeping an eye on them, and directed SAPS to their location.

Officers managed to arrest four suspects who had in their possession various bank cards, Identity Documents and a wallet.

Later, it emerged that one of the suspects has an outstanding warrant for assault in Manenberg.

A few hours before, CCTV operators in the CBD spotted a man pulling a large cable along the elevated freeway outgoing – he was arrested for cable theft and detained at Cape Town Central SAPS.

‘The City’s CCTV cameras once again showed to be a valuable asset as operators could use the real time footage to identify and track suspects to the scene. Information gathered on the CCTV network enabled our enforcement agencies as well as SAPS to act swiftly and execute successful arrests. With the roll out of additional CCTV cameras throughout the metropole we will hopefully see an increase in crime detection and arrests,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

On Sunday, 24 April 2022 members of the Metro Police Gang and Drugs Task Team responded to a shooting incident that occurred in Rywood Walk, Hanover Park. Three people were shot and taken to Heideveld day hospital for medical assistance. Officers received information regarding what the shooter was wearing. Officers went to the hospital to verify the information and saw that it was indeed a match to the description. The suspect, aged 23 had a flesh wound to his stomach and was receiving medical attention. One 9mm live round was found in his pocket. The suspect was later discharged and taken to Philippi SAPS and charged for attempted murder, illegal possession of ammunition and discharging of a firearm in a municipal area.

Metro Police officers arrested a total of 96 suspects in the past week, and issued 3 938 fines.

TRAFFIC SERVICE

Traffic officers arrested 36 suspects – 23 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 13 for reckless and negligent driving. They also issued 81 974 fines, impounded 155 public transport vehicles and arrested 1 358 motorists with outstanding warrants of arrest.

Their Law Enforcement counterparts made 102 arrests, and issued 3 514 fines.
