Suspects apprehended for various crimes in Kraaifontein and Nyanga

WESTERN CAPE Concerted efforts by our members resulted in multiple arrests during this past weekend for various crimes committed in the Kraaifontein and Nyanga policing precinct.

Police members attached to Kraaifontein SAPS arrested two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Saturday 29 February 2020 and Sunday 01 March 2020 respectively.

The members were conducting crime prevention operations in Traviata Avenue, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein at around 02:30. They noticed several suspicious looking men standing in the street and approached them. Upon noticing the members approaching, one of the suspects threw an object over a wall they were standing next to, claiming that it was a toy. One of the members jumped over the wall to retrieve the object and discovered that it was in actual fact a .38 Special firearm containing one round of ammunition.

In an unrelated incident, members arrested a 34-year-old male at 01:30 on Sunday 01 March 2020 in Redebe Street, Wallacedene for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The members were busy with routine crime prevention patrols when they noticed a man walking with a firearm in his hand. When the suspect saw the police he dropped the firearm and started running. The police apprehended the suspect and also recovered the firearm, a silver revolver containing six rounds of ammunition, from the street where it was dropped.

Both suspects were arrested and detained on possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition charges at Kraaifontein SAPS. The suspects appeared in the Blue Downs Regional Court today, Monday 02 March 2020 on the mentioned charge.

In Nyanga, two suspects were arrested this past Saturday 29 February 2020 for separate incidences of murder. A 38-year-old woman handed herself over to the police for allegedly stabbing the deceased in Phantsi Kocingo Infomal Settlement, Browns Farm, Nyanga. The second suspect, aged 35, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted and fatally injured the deceased on Saturday in Thabo Mbeki Informal Settlement. The two suspects were arrested on charges of murder and appeared today at the Athlone Magistrates Court.

In an unrelated matter, four suspects aged between 18 and 22 and a 16-year-old minor were arrested on Sunday 01 March 2020 after being found in possession of a vehicle that had been hijacked in Khakakhaka Street on Saturday night In Browns Farm, Nyanga. All five suspects are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrate Court this week on a charge related to possession of a hijacked vehicle.
