Suspects arrested for possession of copper cables on Mitchell’s Plain

WESTERN CAPE – On Thursday, 12 March 2020, members attached to Mitchell’s Plain SAPS arrested five men aged between 23 and 42 for damaging and removing essential rail infrastructure and possession of presumed stolen copper cables. At about 06:30 the members acted on information about suspects who are removing copper cables from the Mitchell’s Plain rail way line adjacent to 7th Avenue Eastridge.

Upon their arrival on the scene, police found two men in possession of a large quantity of copper cables next to the railway line. The members followed up further information which led them to a nearby street in Eastridge where a three more suspects were found in possession of copper cables.

The members confiscated approximately 120 meters of Cantenary and Overhead copper cables. The copper cables has an estimated street value of R80 000-00.

The suspect appeared today Friday, 13 March 2020, in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate Court on charges relating to the Criminal Amendment ACT (causing damage and tampering with rail infrastructure), possession of presumed stolen property.
