Swellendam police confiscates illegal firearms on N2 highway

Western Cape police management applauded members of the Swellendam police who responded swiftly to remove illegal firearms and ammunition from the streets when they followed-up on information that led to the confiscation of various items on the N2 highway near Swellendam on Monday, 01 March 2021.

The members were on patrol at about 18:30 when they were alerted about a suspicious bag that was seen along the highway at the Appelsbosch, a picnic spot next to the road, by a member of the public. Upon arrival at the picnic spot they noticed an abandoned black sports bag. A search of the bag resulted in the discovery of the illegal firearms, firearm parts as well as ammunition.

The following items were confiscated:

• 1 x R1 rifle

• 1 x handgun

• 105 x R1 rounds

• 3 x 9mm rounds

An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation and the suspect who abandoned these items is yet to be arrested.

The police management also thanked the member of the public who conveyed the important information to the police. This unselfish act contributes greatly to policing efforts to remove illegal firearms out of the hands of criminals to ensure that communities are and feel safe.
