Ten suspects arrested in Nyanga this week

WESTERN CAPE – Police efforts to root out criminality in the Nyanga precinct result in remarkable successes when ten suspects were arrested this week for crimes ranging from rape, murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of hijacked vehicles and possession of an imitation firearm.

Three suspects aged between 20 and 28 appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate Court today facing rape charges. The suspects were arrested on Monday, 29 March 2021 for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl after consuming liquor together in the Browns Farm area meanwhile a 24-year-old suspect was also arrested yesterday for allegedly raping another girl after they were drinking together in New Rest Informal Settlement in Crossroads.

Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition and an imitation firearm were also recovered during crime prevention operations that were conducted in the Browns Farm area. One firearm was recovered in Debeza Street yesterday, a second firearm and an imitation firearm were recovered this morning. Three suspects aged 18, 25 and 32 were arrested.

A 21-year-old woman was also arrested yesterday on a charge of murder. The suspect had allegedly stabbed her cousin, 27 after an argument. Two other suspects aged 23 and 24 and were arrested in possession of hijacked vehicles in Browns Farm area.

The suspects are expected to appear in Athlone and Wynberg Magistrate Court facing charges of murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and imitation firearm and rape.

The Western Cape SAPS management applauded members for their vigilance and concerted efforts in the fight against crime.
