The City of Cape Town mourns the passing of Queen Elizabeth II

Statement by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis

The City of Cape Town joins the world and the rest of the Commonwealth in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It was in Cape Town in 1947, on the occasion of her 21st birthday, that the then Princess Elizabeth pledged that “my whole life, whether it be long or short” shall be devoted to the service of the public. Her speech can be found here.

The Queen lived a long and consequential life, fulfilling her pledge to serve until her very last breath at the age of 96. She was an exemplary leader of the kind seldom seen in the modern era.

We extend our condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom as they mourn their sovereign.
