Third suspects to appear in court following murder of Gauteng legislature member

A man who had been sought by police in relation a case of murder, rape, carjacking and robbery aggravated committed in Meyerton on 13 December 2018, is expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate Court on Thursday 27 December 2018. Two of his accomplices aged 22 and 24 were first to be arrested in an intelligence-led operation on Thursday 20 December 2018, and subsequently appeared in Court on 24 December 2018 where the case was postponed to 04 January 2019. The duo remain in custody pending the bail hearing in January 2019.

A 40-year old Member of Gauteng Legislature, a 22-year old driver and a 36-year old female were allegedly travelling on the R-59 near Meyerton when their vehicle experienced mechanical problems. A mechanic was summoned and was still attending to the breakdown when the four were suddenly attacked by five armed males.

The former MPL died after being shot in the upper body, while the female passenger was allegedly raped by one of the suspects. The victims were then reportedly robbed of their cellphones, clothing items after being stripped naked, and cash.

The suspects are alleged to have taken off in a vehicle that had been called in to tow the broken down one; and that vehicle was found shortly after the incident with the battery missing. The battery has since been recovered.

Police also recovered two firearms and ammunition at one of the suspects’ home. The 24-year old suspect will face an additional two counts of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Both firearms have since been positively linked to a previous house robbery in Meyerton.

Two suspects are still at large and police are appealing for anyone with information of their whereabouts to report to police either in Meyerton or their nearest police station; or to call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
