Three police officers among five suspects arrested for extortion, kidnapping and defeating the end of justice in Johannesburg

Parktown – Gauteng police continue with their zero tolerance approach to corruption as they arrested on Tuesday evening, 29 October 2019 three of their own along with an ex-police officer and a civilian for defeating the ends of justice, extortion and kidnapping.

Police responded to a tip-off about a corrupt activity in progress in the basement at Johannesburg Central Police Station.

It is alleged that station management together with anti-corruption investigating unit members proceeded to the basement where indeed they found and questioned five males who told police that their relative’s panel van had been seized by policemen who had offered to release the vehicle and the driver in exchange for cash. The said panel van was loaded with compressed dagga allegedly from Swaziland.

The suspects arrived at the scene while the ACIU members were still questioning the other five men. Upon searching the suspects, cash, which the suspects could not account for, was found in their possession and they were arrested immediately and charged with defeating the ends of justice, extortion and kidnapping.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has reiterated the SAPS stance on cleaning up the system and rooting out corrupt elements from within the ranks. “This arrest must send out a stern warning to those police officers who might be harbouring thoughts of engaging in corrupt activities. We will not hesitate to deal with them decisively,” remarked General Mawela.
