Accra:Transnet Engineering and Wabtec have entered into a significant Material and Technical Support Agreement valued at approximately R6.6 billion. This long-term deal is set to enhance the performance and reliability of Transnet's locomotive fleet, specifically focusing on the Class 43D (C30Aci) and 44D (ES40Aci) models.
According to South African Government News Agency, the agreement is designed to improve locomotive availability and maintenance performance, crucial for supporting key freight corridors throughout South Africa. These locomotives are integral to transporting export commodities, containers, and general freight across the nation.
Bessie Mabunda, Chief Executive of Transnet Engineering, emphasized that this agreement aligns with Transnet's Reinvent for Growth strategy. It marks a pivotal step in advancing the operational efficacy of their locomotive fleet, thereby enhancing service delivery and the logistics competitiveness of the country.
Under the terms of the agreement, Wabtec will supply components, technical expertise, and predictive maintenance capabilities for the Class 43D and 44D fleets. Wabtec's Expert-on-Alert digital condition-monitoring platform will be a key feature of the support package, aimed at improving locomotive performance and facilitating quicker maintenance cycles.
The partnership goes beyond maintenance support to include technical collaboration, knowledge transfer, and localization initiatives. These efforts are expected to bolster local rail capabilities, foster industry skills, and contribute to the long-term growth and sustainability of South Africa's rail sector.
The deal was finalized through Transnet's established procurement and governance frameworks and formally signed by Bessie Mabunda and Tefo Mokaila, Director of Wabtec South Africa, during a ceremony attended by Transnet Group Chief Operating Officer Solly Letsoalo.
