South Africa to commemorate International Civil Aviation Day with a spectacular airshow and career expo

The Department of Transport together with the Western Cape Provincial Government, the South African Civil Aviation Authority SACAA) and the South African Air Force (SAAF) invite members of the media to the commemoration of the 2017 International Civil Aviation Day (ICAD) and a Career Expo, which will take at the Air Force Base Langebaanweg in Langebaan, Western Cape.

ICAD is an annual event initiated by the United Nations (UN) and it is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of civil aviation as well as the role that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) plays in international air transport. ICAO is a UN specialist agency responsible for administering and standardising the world’s civil aviation activities.

The commemoration will comprise three main events an airshow and a career exhibition. The career exhibition will be attended by 2000 learners from the neighbouring communities, especially those that were historically marginalised. In addition to learning about the various careers in aviation, the school learners will also be addressed by dignitaries that would among others include the Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, the Western Cape MEC of Education, the Major General of the Air Force Base Langebaanweg, the CEO of SACAA and other high-ranking representatives of other aviation institutions.

Minister Maswanganyi will deliver a keynote address on the day.

The theme for the 2017 ICAD is ‘working together to ensure no country is left behind’.

The occasion will also be used to commemorate the contribution of one of the South African struggle heroes, O.R Tambo, who would have turned 100 years this year.
