South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has appointed an independent ad-hoc tribunal to process all appeals relating to the Health Ombudsman’s report into the deaths of 100 mental health patients.

The Appeals Tribunal will be headed by retired Judge President of the Gauteng High Court, Bernard Ngoepe to hear appeals relating to the deaths of more than 100 mentally-ill patients who died after they were moved from Life Esidimeni centres to various facilities run by non-governmental organizations across Gauteng Province.

“The Minister of Health has appointed the Ad-hoc Tribunal to look into the appeals that come through so that they process those kinds of appeals,” Health Department Spokesman Joe Maila said here Monday.

“We received some appeals therefore the minister today (Monday) officially appointed the tribunal to process those issues. We believe that they need to wrap up their work within two months.”
