Two arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms

ZWIDE: Two male suspects were arrested in separate incidents for the possession of unlicensed firearms in the Zwide area yesterday and early this morning respectively.

The Motherwell Cluster Operational Command Centre (OCC) members arrested a 36-year-old male yesterday at 14:30 in front of a tavern in Tusebe Street, Zwide following a search of a vehicle he was driving. The suspect alighted from the vehicle, a silver Toyota Etios and ran into the tavern when he spotted the OCC members. After the vehicle was searched a .22 revolver with 6 rounds of ammunition were discovered. The firearm was reported stolen in Cambridge during October 2015.

In an unrelated incident the OCC members also searched a suspicious male walking in Van Der Kemp Street, Zwide early this morning at 02:30 and found him in possession of a 6,35mm pistol with one round of ammunition. The firearm owner have not reported the firearm as stolen.

Both suspects were charged for the illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and will appear before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. Additional charges may also be brought for the possession of the stolen .22 revolver and possible charges for the licensed owner of the 6.35 pistol that failed to report the firearm as stolen.
