Two more suspects arrested for theft of catenary cable

On Thursday, 06 October 2021 Hawks members from Newcastle Serious Organised Crime unit arrested two suspects, Nkosinathi Mndaweni (51) and Andile Shongwe (34) for theft of catenary cables which happened at Kingsley area in August this year.

It is alleged that members received information about a vehicle which was involved in the theft of Transnet cable at Kingsley area. A joint operation was conducted and the said vehicle was found parked along R33 between Vryheid and Dundee. Upon searching the vehicle police found catenary cable to the street value of approximately R175 000.00. Police also found a bolt cutter, generator and the grinder used in the commission of crime.

The cable was positively identified by the Transnet Technician and Lindokuhle Sibiya (34) was immediately placed under arrest. Mndaweni and Shongwe fled the scene hence they were arrested this week. They were also charged for damage to infrastructure and appeared in the Utrecht Magistrate’s Court today. The case was postponed to 13 October 2021.
