Two police officers injured, suspect in custody

In the early hours of this morning, Inanda Cluster Task Team members were conducting an operation on Castlehill Drive in Newlands West when they were approached by a male who informed them that his mother has been hijacked whilst entering her home in Ashcastle Place in Newlands West.

Whilst police officers were taking information from the informant, the vehicle passed the police officers at a very high speed. Police chased the vehicle and realised that it was the same vehicle that was hijacked. Seeing the police officers, the suspects opened fire at police who retaliated and a shootout ensued.

Two police officers were shot and injured and the suspects sped off. Police officers who responded to the shooting, arrested one suspect and recovered a hijacked vehicle. Three suspects managed to evade the arrest.

It is alleged that today at 02:30, a 45-year-old female was stationery on her driveway in Ashcastle Place with her sister when four males approached them. They were hijacked of the vehicle at gunpoint, assaulted with firearm butts and robbed of their valuables. A case of carjacking has been opened at the Newlands East police station.

The arrested suspect will be charged for carjacking and two counts of attempted murder. He will appear in court soon. Police with K9 Unit are still searching for the three suspects. The injured police officers were taken to hospital for medical attention.
