WESTERN CAPE – In order to prevent and combat crime that may threaten the safety and security of community members, police from Mitchells Plain acted on information swiftly while busy with crime prevention patrols in their area and arrested two suspects.

On Sunday, 04 April 2021 at about 18:00, members of Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention received about firearms and drugs at a premises in Zelda Street, Tafelsig.

Upon arrival at the address, the members saw a man bending in the front yard. The man went inside the house when he saw the police. When police interrogated him, they walked him back to where he had been fiddling and found a black plastic bag with ammunition in the sand. They confiscated an assortment of ammunition. The 28-year-old man was arrested and faces charges relating to the possession of ammunition and will appear in court once charged.

Later the evening at about 22:00, the members were conducting crime prevention duties in Francis Street, Tafelsig, when they noticed a suspicious man fleeing when he saw them. They gave chase and apprehended the suspect. Upon searching him they found a 9mm Barrette and 26 rounds of ammunition. The 39-year-old man was arrested and faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in court once charged.

Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patekile commended the members for their hard work and dedication. He says that the police will continue tirelessly to clamp down on crime in the Western Cape. He also thanked the community for their support in reporting crime.
