UJ probes registration scam claims

Pretoria – The University of Johannesburg (UJ) says it is investigating allegations of a registration scam run by a former member of its Student Representative Council (SRC).

University spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen said the institution has taken note of media reports regarding a former SRC member who, together with others, asks aspiring students to pay money to help them register at UJ.

“UJ takes these allegations of criminal conduct very seriously. In addition to looking into the matter internally, the university has also approached the police to investigate the claims so that all those who are associated with the alleged scam, whether inside or outside the university, can be brought to book,” Esterhuizen said.

The university has also encouraged those who have any information on the alleged scam to get in touch with the institution immediately by calling UJ investigator Amanda Strydom on 011 559 4299, 011 559 3121 or email investigations@uj.ac.za.
