Update: Alleged shooting of a student by a member/s of the SAPS on 15 March 2021

The South African Police Service can now confirm that yesterday police have successfully traced the 20-year-old student who was allegedly shot by police. A case of attempted murder was registered at the Hillbrow police station after the student was interviewed.

The student alleged that on 15 March 2021 she and her male friend were picked up by police who were travelling in a marked police vehicle and when they were being dropped off near the Bramfontein Cemetery, an altercation ensued between herself and a police officer. She further alleged that she was then forced out of the police vehicle and subsequently shot in her leg.

This incident happened in an area where no students protests were taking place.

The police officers against whom this allegation is being levelled have not yet been identified. This matter is being referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directive (IPID) for further investigation.

The National Commissioner has expressed that this matter is being viewed very seriously by the SAPS and he has also sanctioned a departmental investigation.

The management of the SAPS would like to reiterate its position that members of the SAPS are always encouraged to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to execute their duties within the boundaries of the law. Should any of our members exceed the boundaries of the law in any situation then such members would be required to account for their actions both criminally as well as departmentally.
