Cases of malaria are expected to increase in South Africa as the country is currently in its high malaria season, according to the Director of the University of Pretoria’s Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control, Prof Tiaan de Jager.

Speaking on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) here Monday, de Jager said weather conditions and climate change were hampering efforts to eliminate malaria in the country.

The current abnormal climatic conditions in South Africa are making it conducive for the breeding of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, he added.

Recently, two women from Pretoria died from malaria and 40 people have tested positive to having malaria.

Teams of health experts have been dispatched to deal with malaria outbreaks in parts of Limpopo Province and North West Province.
