The City’s enforcement services made 441 arrests between them, compared to 329 the week before, and issued 56 050 fines.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) meanwhile, logged 1 403 incidents over a 48-hour period this weekend. Read more below:
‘The increase in arrests is the result of the City’s ongoing investment in building safer communities. We are doing our part, running hundreds of integrated operations week after week in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, and we have boots on the ground, having tangible results. It’s imperative that we create synergy with the criminal justice system, so that these operational results can go full circle,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In the past week, Law Enforcement officers conducted 499 enforcement operations, resulting in 204 arrests. Officers also issued 3 191 fines.
Their Metro Police counterparts made 179 arrests and issued 4 717 fines.
On Sunday, 14 August, officers arrested nine persons during crime prevention patrols in the Strand and Gordons Bay area on various charges, including for the possession of drugs, possession of an imitation firearm, threatening a police official, resisting arrest and riotous behaviour.
The suspects were detained at Gordon’s Bay and Strand SAPS.
CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICES
Traffic officers arrested 58 suspects – 47 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 11 for reckless and negligent driving. Officers also issued 48 142 fines, impounded 125 public transport vehicles and executed 1 201 warrants of arrest.
PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE
The City’s emergency call centre logged 1 403 incidents between Friday, 12 August and Sunday, 14 August.
Nearly 50% of calls related to requests for medical assistance.
There were also 94 assault cases, down from 156 the weekend before, and 17 domestic violence reports (28 the weekend before).
Motor vehicle accidents reported were static, week on week, with 40 recorded this past weekend, compared to last week’s 41, while pedestrian vehicle accidents dropped from 21 to 12.
‘The continued and increased enforcement patrols resulting in the increase in arrests, especially drug-related arrests, shows that our officers are in the communities following up on information received and working closely with Neighbourhood Watches, members of the community and the South African Police Service. We will continue with our enforcement efforts to get criminals out of the community and driving offenders off the roads so that we can create a safer environment and roads,’ added Alderman Smith
