Woman jailed for identity theft

Pretoria: A woman has been sentenced to a year in prison without the option of paying a fine for using the identity of another woman to obtain a driver’s licence.

Nokukhanya Mbhehane pleaded guilty to charges of fraud at the Brixton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

She was arrested in September following an investigation by the anti-corruption unit belonging to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

Samkeliswe Khumalo lost her identity document in 2002. In 2010, Mbhehane illegally obtained a driver’s licence in the name of Khumalo and renewed it in 2015.

RTMC said a number of transactions, including hire purchase and loan agreements, have been fraudulently entered into with various institutions in the name of Khumalo.

There are still two pending fraud cases against Mbhehane, where she used the same stolen identity document to obtain loans from Standard and Absa banks.

“Steps will now be taken to cancel the illegally obtained driver’s licence,” the RTMC said.
