CAPE TOWN, HUAWEI, undeterred by the restrictions imposed on it by the United States government, has established some 40 000 fifth-generation cellular network technology (5G) base stations without American components since the sanctions by the administration of President Donald Trump earlier this year.

The figure represents a tenth of the total number of base stations that the Chinese-headquartered technology firm has put in place globally.

Huawei Vice President: Mohamed Madkour, disclosed the figures at the annual AfricaCom conference in Cape Town.

The last 40 000 of these 5G base stations have no American components. We have de-Americanised the exercise, Madkour disclosed.

As of 2019, he said, Huawei had a 2/3 market share of the 5G space.

The breakthroughs are in spite of the sanctions the US government over contentious allegations of impropriety by Huawei.

Subsequently, US firms cut ties with the Shenzhen-headquartered firm.

Madour dismissed the accusations as baseless. The furore is seen as part of a spat between China and US, the world’s powerhouses.

Madour was nonetheless upbeat on Huawei’s 5G roadmap but insisted this was reliant on governments’ provision of the spectrum.

Spectrum is the lifeblood of a country’s economy, the Huawei executive said.

October, Huawei announced it had registered a 24,4 percent growth year-on-year in revenues to CNY610,8 billion ($86 billion) in the first three quarters of this year despite the US restrictions.
