The Gauteng Provincial Government through the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) has reconceptualised its Internship Programme, to offer Gateway Internships to assist graduates gain work experience which will increase their chances of securing permanent employment.<\/p>\n
To date, over 1000 young people have been placed on the internship programme.<\/p>\n
This initiative, coupled with the awarding of bursaries to academically deserving students, and other programmes in postschool education and training, are some of the ways in which the provincial government is facilitating the empowerment of Gauteng youth to realise their full potential.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Bursary Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, 02 January 2020, Premier David Makhura said that: “At the heart of this initiative is the recognition of the importance of highly educated and skilled talent for the longterm economic growth prospects of the province and the country.”<\/p>\n
Since 2014, R1 billion has been invested into the GCRA bursary scheme which has benefitted 14000 students.<\/p>\n
Some of the beneficiaries have gone on to become qualified professionals in various fields and are contributing to the country’s economic growth.<\/p>\n
As the number of learners passing matric increases, so does the demand for bursaries, and to meet this growing demand the provincial government has entered into partnership with the private companies such as Samsung and Nashua in order to reach more learners.<\/p>\n
Samsung has allocated R3 million to the bursary programme which has enabled funding of an additional 31 students, whilst Nashua has allocated R500 000 which will fund 5 students, and the targeted group is female students who wish to study towards an Information Technology qualification.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
