PRETORIA – A 44 year old\nsuspect from Durban is expected to appear at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court\non Monday for alleged fraud, money laundering and corruption amounting to R53\nmillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was arrested\non Friday by the National Clean Audit Task Team of the Directorate for Priority\nCrime Investigation (DPCI) after he was linked to the theft of R53 million from\nthe City of Tshwane Municipality which was earmarked for the National Fund for\nMunicipality Workers (NFMW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The money was allegedly\nstolen from the municipality’s bank account on 30 August 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was discovered during\ninvestigations that the stolen funds were allegedly laundered from the company\nSAGOLD (Pty) Ltd into several businesses as well as local and international\nbank accounts of the first accused’s relatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This suspect is to be\njoined with the first accused Ivo Gunter Wegrostek (62) who was arrested on 18\nDecember 2019. The latter is out on bail of R 100 000 with strict bail\nconditions which, among others, include restricted international travelling,\nreporting daily at the Douglasdale SAPS, not to leave Gauteng without the\nconsent of the investigating officer and he was also ordered to handover his\nAustrian and South African passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case was remanded to\n21 May 2020 in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court, Pretoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is expected that the\ncase against this suspect will also be remanded to 21 May 2020 at the Pretoria\nMagistrate’s Court in order to join the first accused where he will be accused\nnumber two (2). The team managed to freeze R 400 000-00 in the matter.\nThe Assets Forfeiture Unit (AFU) is part of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Head of the\nDPCI, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya commended the team that has worked\ntirelessly on this matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I appreciate the\nefforts made by the team to gather enough evidence to link these suspects.
