The City of Cape Town\u2019s Road Infrastructure department is implementing some traffic calming measures in the Athlone region. The work commences today, Thursday, 5 May 2022 and will continue until 20 May 2022, if all goes as planned.<\/p>\n
The City would like to advise residents and road users of the construction of traffic calming measures. Traffic calming is the practice of placing physical measures in a road to control the speeds at which motorists travel. The measures will include pedestrian crossings and speed humps.<\/p>\n
In terms of the provisions of the City\u2019s current Traffic Calming Policy, the current focus is on the protection of vulnerable road users where they typically occur in their highest volumes. This typically includes schools and other public facilities, such as hospitals. The works included in this project will take place along the following roads:<\/p>\n
\u2022\tBrushwood Road in Bridgetown<\/p>\n
\u2022\tSecond Street in Welcome Estate<\/p>\n
\u2022\tDownberg Road in Hanover Park<\/p>\n
\u2018Our teams have prioritised these roads as areas where increased road safety for all road users was definitely needed. We will continue to identify areas with our various communities where urgent traffic calming interventions are required. There is a great demand and therefore we work in accordance with the Traffic Calming Policy where our focus is to protect the most vulnerable road users, typically in close proximity to schools and public facilities,\u2019 said the City\u2019s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.<\/p>\n
All of the work mentioned will take place Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:00.<\/p>\n
Traffic moving in both directions will be affected and flag personnel will regulate traffic in one direction at a time. Work areas will be temporarily demarcated to regulate traffic flow.<\/p>\n
Residents may park their vehicles in the demarcated area after 18:00 provided that they are removed by 06:30. Parked vehicles that obstruct the construction works will be moved or towed away to avoid interfering with the work.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
