The City of Cape Town is calling on residents in Strand to comment on the proposed conversion of a portion of Beach Road and Haarlem Street into one-way streets to accommodate the second phase of the Strand sea wall rehabilitation project. The public participation process is commencing on Monday, 22 August 2022, with the closing date for comments on Thursday, 22 September 2022. <\/p>\n
The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management branch will be constructing a new promenade and enhancing the existing sea wall along Beach Road, Strand.<\/p>\n
In order to achieve this, the City proposes to convert a portion of Beach Road into a one-way street for west-bound traffic and for Haarlem Street to be converted into a one-way to accommodate east-bound traffic.<\/p>\n
‘Our teams are busy finalising the design and implementation of the second phase of the Strand sea wall rehabilitation project but in order to achieve the successful implementation of the next phase, it became evident that changes needed to be made to the current layout of roads in the surrounding residential area,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.<\/p>\n
The proposals entail the following:<\/p>\n
\u2022\tTo turn a portion of Beach Road into a one-way between the intersections with St Andrews Drive and Haarlem Street for west bound traffic<\/p>\n
\u2022\tTo turn Haarlem Street into a one-way to accommodate east bound traffic<\/p>\n
\u2022\tThe proposed changes to the street lay-out will become permanent once construction is completed.<\/p>\n
Phase two of the Strand sea wall rehabilitation project will deal with the wave over-topping and windblown sand issues which require an intervention. This forms part of the maintenance and rehabilitation of City infrastructure intended for the Strand area.<\/p>\n
The City is now giving the local community an opportunity to submit their views and comments.<\/p>\n
‘The conversion of a portion of Beach Road into a one-way will ease traffic congestion along the beachfront and will improve road safety for all users. I encourage the community from Strand and interested parties to please participate in this process by either attending the open day, or submitting comments online. We know this is a community that takes great pride in their local beachfront and I encourage all to please make their voices heard and to submit comments,’ said Alderman Andrews.<\/p>\n
The City invites all residents and interested and affected parties to an open day where City officials will be present to answer questions, and note comments.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
