The City\u2019s R134, 3 million Harare Infill housing project in Khayelitsha is making steady progress. Today, Friday 19 August 2022, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and senior officials in the Human Settlements Directorate visited the project to take a closer look at progress and to address the community about the recent unlawful occupation attempts<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The City has been engaging the Khayelitsha community over recent months in an effort to protect the Harare Infill housing project from unlawful occupation. This follows new threats of unlawful occupation of City projects, adding to the serious trend of thousands of opportunities having been lost over the last two years.<\/p>\n
‘Despite the challenges we have faced at the Harare Infill housing project, we are pleased to see that construction is on track. This project will provide opportunities to 900 qualifying beneficiaries, which includes 417 opportunities in Phase 1 and 483 homes in Phase 2. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
‘Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of November 2022 and Phase 2 will be completed in April 2023, if all goes as planned.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
‘Some 439 units have already been handed over and we taking proactive steps to ensure that the remaining beneficiaries receive their homes as soon as possible. Many opportunities have been lost in Khayelitsha due to unlawful occupation and cannot allow this to continue. Queue-jumping for housing opportunities is unacceptable and residents and communities are encouraged to support the City’s efforts to protect beneficiaries, community projects and services by alerting us to any attempts to occupy land,’ said Councillor Booi.<\/p>\n
Beneficiaries of all City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and the City’s Housing Needs Register to ensure that housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.<\/p>\n
