The City\u2019s Traffic Service, Metro Police and Law Enforcement Department officers arrested 299 suspects and issued 80 379 fines during weekly enforcement operations. Traffic officers also arrested 46 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. The Public Emergency Communication Centre dealt with 1 889 emergency calls over the weekend. During weekly patrols Traffic officers issued 72 436 fines and arrested 51 suspects of which 46 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and five for reckless and negligent driving <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Officers also impounded 317 public transport vehicles and executed 842 warrants of arrests .<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Officers also made two drug related arrests. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
METRO POLICE <\/p>\n
Officers arrested 95 suspects and issued 3851 fines. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
On Saturday, 18 February 2023 officers on patrol in Manenberg recovered a fire arm and ammunition when they reacted to a Shotspotter alert. When officers arrived in the area members of the public gave a detailed description of the suspects. Officers saw the suspects at a residence in Irvine street. A search of the premises led to the recovery of a 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off and 23 9mm live rounds of ammunition hidden in a secret compartment between the ceiling and the roof.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Four suspects, aged between 22 and 43 was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and detained at Manenberg South African Police Service.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE(PECC) <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The PECC received 1 889 calls over the past weekend, of which 745 were medical related calls. The centre also dealt with 95 fire related calls and 31 vehicle accidents were recorded. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
LAW ENFORCEMENT <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
During the past week, the City\u2019s Law Enforcement Department officers conducted 547 operations which resulted in 154 arrests \u2013 128 of which were made by officers attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme(LEAP). Of the 128 arrests made by LEAP officers, 84 were for the illegal possession of drugs. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u2018Our increased efforts shows that visible policing in communities is effective in our fight against crime and to get criminals and illegal fire arms, ammunition and drugs off the streets and out of the community. The rapid response and swift action by our dedicated officers often stop a violent crime and possibly save innocent lives. The City\u2019s enforcement agencies is using technology and good relationships with communities and Neighbourhood Watches to fight crime but we want to do more. We will continue engaging with national government for increased authority that will authorise our members to conclude investigations and directly compile case dockets for submission to the National Prosecuting Authority. We are no longer interested in just the arrest but want to see the entire process through that will ultimately see the resulting prosecution and conviction of these offenders \u2019 said the City\u2019s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
