Pretoria: Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Hassan Mako has urged South Africans, particularly young people, to reflect on the key milestones in the country's democratic journey and use dialogue to deepen social cohesion, strengthen nation-building, and foster a shared national identity.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Mayor was addressing young people in Vanderbijlpark during the Milestones of Freedom Provincial Launch, which commemorated those who lost their lives in the Boipatong massacre on 17 June 1992. Mako emphasized the importance of honest and open discussions about the nation's history and shared freedom to build greater social cohesion and a common understanding. He called for continued efforts to nurture, protect, and defend nation-building while standing firmly against racism and related intolerance in all forms.

Mako recounted the tragic events of June 17, 1992, when approximately 300 men, armed with weapons and military-style coordination, descended on the community, resulting in the loss of 45 lives, including women, children, and the elderly. He stressed that remembering the struggles of Boipatong's people is about honoring their sacrifices and reflecting on the historic journey towards a democratic South Africa.

This year marks several significant milestones in South Africa's democratic journey, including the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, the 50th anniversary of the 1976 youth uprisings, the 70th anniversary of the anti-pass campaign, and the 60th anniversary of the forced removals from District Six. These events highlight the long struggle for democracy and freedom, underscoring the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and equitable society.

The campaign also underscores the government's commitment to building on democratic gains and accelerating service delivery to communities. Vereeniging Magistrate's Court Manager Teboho Motloenya emphasized the importance of understanding the Constitution and its values as South Africa marks the 30th anniversary of its adoption. He highlighted the role of the National Schools Moot Court Competition in educating young people about the Constitution and its significance in promoting education as a vital tool for success.

Motloenya encouraged young people to appreciate the opportunities and freedoms they have, emphasizing the importance of education in sharpening their minds and understanding the implementation of the Constitution.
