Today, the City of Cape Town handed over land earmarked for a mixed-use development in Khayelitsha to the Khayelitsha Community Trust (KCT). The land is earmarked for the extension of the Khayelitsha Mall as a mixed-use site.

Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and officials in the City’s Human Settlements Department officially handed over the piece of land to the KCT for development. Construction is to commence in the coming months.

‘In recent weeks, City Council approved the release of the piece of land in Khayelitsha for mixed-use development. Today, we officially handed over the land to the KCT and we look forward to seeing construction commence. The KCT’s mixed-used development will include affordable housing opportunities for residents as well as retail and commercial opportunities for local businesses.

‘The City is working hard to deliver housing opportunities across the metro and the Land Release Priority Programme is making great strides. Identifying large mixed-use sites for private development is one of the Land Release Priority Programme’s focus areas, and we have seen good progress since April this year.

‘Our central and metro-wide housing projects are ongoing and we remain committed to enabling affordable housing opportunities on suitable, well-located land across the metro through partnerships with developers and communities.

‘The City thanks all partners, stakeholders and City officials for making this handover possible and we look forward to seeing the development benefit the community and residents,’ said Councillor Booi.
