Mthatha: The Chairperson of the Portfolio on Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms Lusizo Makhubela, is set to deliver a keynote address at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) Annual Young Scientist Conference. This prominent event will be held at the Water Sisulu University from September 13 to 15, 2026.
According to African Press Organization, the conference will focus on the theme "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063". The organisers emphasized that this theme is in line with the African Union's focus on enhancing water and sanitation security as essential elements for public health, economic transformation, and climate resilience throughout Africa.
ASSAf's mission spans all areas of scientific research, leveraging the expertise of South Africa's leading scientists to apply scientific principles for societal benefit. The ASSAf Annual Young Scientists Conference aims to encourage youth involvement in science, technology, and innovation by providing an interactive platform for promising early-career researchers from South Africa and across the African continent.
Ms Makhubela highlighted the committee's oversight responsibility over the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and its affiliates, advocating for increased youth engagement in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. She remarked that the youth represent South Africa's future, emphasizing the necessity of scientific, technological, and innovative acumen in navigating an increasingly scientific world.
