Electoral Commission Hails Success of Day 1 Special Voting for 2026 Local Government Elections

Pretoria:The Electoral Commission (IEC) has expressed satisfaction with the successful first day of Special Voting in the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE).

According to South African Government News Agency, the Commission thanked voters, candidates, and political parties for their cooperation and acknowledged the dedicated efforts of election officials at voting stations and those conducting home visits. The Commission stated that the day's proceedings provided a solid basis for improved performance on the second day of special votes and on election day.

Voters who have not yet cast their special votes are encouraged to do so when voting stations open at 8am on Tuesday, which marks the second and final day for approved voters to cast their special votes ahead of Wednesday's Voting Day. Election officials will also continue conducting home visits on Tuesday to assist eligible voters unable to reach voting stations.

The Commission urged voters to adhere strictly to voting protocols to maintain the secrecy and integrity of the process, emphasizing the prohibition of photographing marked ballot papers and the importance of respecting election officials' instructions.

Additionally, the Commission highlighted that campaigning, canvassing, or intimidating voters within voting stations is prohibited, and cooperation with election officials is crucial. They appealed to the public to avoid interfering with electoral staff during home visits, noting that intimidation or unauthorized photography is a criminal offense.

Despite challenges such as rainy weather in King Sabata Dalinyebo District and hot conditions in other areas, the Commission encouraged voters to take necessary precautions while exercising their voting rights. The Commission expressed appreciation to all officials, parties, candidates, observers, and stakeholders for their cooperation during the electoral process.
