NatJOINTS Asserts Readiness for 2026 Local Government Elections Amid Security Preparations

Pretoria:The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJOINTS) has confirmed its comprehensive preparedness to ensure the safety of South African citizens during the 2026 Local Government Elections. The announcement was made during a media briefing by NatJOINTS co-chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintain a secure voting environment.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mosikili detailed that their operational readiness is at its "highest operational level," with adequate resources and contingency plans in place to safeguard the electoral process. She assured that law enforcement is fully equipped to handle potential challenges and risks associated with the elections.

Mosikili highlighted the importance of collaboration between citizens and law enforcement to achieve a peaceful election period. She urged South Africans to exercise their democratic rights responsibly, respect others, and avoid spreading misinformation or engaging in intimidation. Furthermore, she reminded participating candidates that no campaigning is allowed beyond midnight before Election Day.

The media briefing also addressed prohibitions against protests on Election Day, with Mosikili warning that any breach of the Municipal Electoral Act would be met with appropriate legal action. The primary goal of law enforcement, she stated, is to create a safe environment for voters to cast their ballots without fear or disruption.

Additionally, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has declared its readiness for the elections, with Chairperson Mosotho Moepya encouraging all stakeholders to support a peaceful and credible electoral process, reaffirming the Commission's commitment to upholding democratic principles.
